Hon. Joseph Muhinja Kamau has installed 136 solar streetlights across ten villages in Githunguri Ward, upgraded 9 floodlight masts, and has 170 additional solar streetlights planned for the 2026/2027 financial year.
The development need
Unlit roads, stages and shopping centres made movement after dark difficult and unsafe for pedestrians, motorists, boda boda riders and traders across the ward's villages.
136 solar streetlights across ten villages
136 solar streetlights have been installed across ten villages in Githunguri Ward. These villages are Kahunira, Ngeteti, Kamwanya, Riamute, Giachumi, Kiairia, Kiangima, Gathigi, Mandanga, and Ciiko.
Solar streetlights run independently of the electricity grid. This design keeps the lights operating reliably even during power outages, while avoiding added electricity costs for the county.
9 floodlight masts upgraded
Nine floodlight masts across the ward have been upgraded as part of this lighting programme. Floodlight masts illuminate wider public areas such as markets, bus stages, and shopping centres, complementing the coverage provided by individual solar streetlights.
Routine maintenance ward-wide
Street lights across Githunguri Ward receive periodical maintenance. Routine maintenance keeps existing lights functional and extends the working life of the installed infrastructure.
